It can suddenly come on, or in the wake of other symptoms. Cardiac arrest is often fatal, unless appropriate action is taken immediately. Death can result swiftly in cardiac arrest if proper steps are not taken immediately. Cardiac arrest may be reversed if CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is performed and a defibrillator is used to shock the heart within a few minutes and restore a normal heart rhythm. Cardiac arrest, called arrhythmias, may be caused by irregular heart rhythms. Ventricular fibrillation is one common arrhythmia associated with cardiac arrest. Ventricular fibrillation means that the lower chambers of the heart suddenly begin to beat, and do not pump blood.
